Chronic stress and inflammation are increasingly understood as deeply interwoven processes, shaping both mental and physical health. Much of modern physiology supports a question many people now ask: does stress cause inflammation in the body? Yoga philosophy provides its own lens on this question, particularly through the concepts of tapas and samskara, which speak to how unprocessed experience shapes mind and behaviour.
Is Inflammation a Samskara That Can Be Burned Through Tapas?
Within the niyamas, or behavioural foundations of yoga, tapas is the practice of conscious endurance, the willingness to stay with what is difficult as a means of awakening greater wisdom. Traditionally, tapas is said to burn through samskaras, the subtle impressions left by past experience that condition patterns of thought, emotion, and reaction. The path to greater self-knowledge involves the gradual loosening of these impressions. As we remain present with what is mentally and physically uncomfortable, the mind becomes clearer and the body less strained.
At The Minded Institute, we enjoy linking philosophy and physiology, so we offer this reflection. Just as samskaras are residues of experience in the mind, inflammation can be viewed as the body’s residue of stress, an imprint left when pressures are not fully processed or resolved. Inflammation often arises from poor health behaviours that accompany chronic stress, such as poor diet, overuse of alcohol, inadequate sleep, and reduced physical activity.
Does Stress Cause Inflammation in the Body?
Psychiatric literature expresses strong links between mental health difficulties and inflammatory signalling. When we are stressed or mentally unwell, we usually present with heightened sympathetic activity, reduced vagal tone, and increased genetic expression of inflammatory proteins. These mechanisms form part of the established connection between chronic stress and inflammation.
Mind–body practices such as slow breathing, yoga nidra, and restorative yoga can reduce inflammation by decreasing sympathetic drive, increasing vagal activity, and inhibiting the expression of genes encoded for inflammation.
Given that these are cornerstones of yoga, this is one of the ways yoga reduces inflammation, the residue of unprocessed stress. If unprocessed stress shapes physiology, could the discipline of staying present reshape it, and is this just as powerful as evoking parasympathetic states? If we consider working with inflammation through the path of tapas, remaining present with difficulty itself and not resorting to poor habits, might we also influence inflammation?
How Conscious Presence Modulates Stress and Inflammation
Current evidence suggests this is possible. Inflammation heightens amygdala reactivity and reduces prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity, weakening emotional regulation. The PFC ordinarily moderates amygdala overactivity and helps us see experience through new perspectives. Conversely, maintaining awareness in the face of strong sensations or emotion, an act that recruits the PFC, dampens amygdala activity, lowers sympathetic output, and enhances vagal tone (Sardinha et al., 2023).
Yoga engages inflammation through complementary processes: conscious endurance and physiological rest. We stay with difficulty when we can, and when it feels overwhelming, we soothe the system through breath and stillness. Through these twin practices, yoga refines the body’s response to stress, tempering the inflammation that arises when we resist what is.
