Practising Yoga Has Benefits for Managing Type-2 Diabetes

A review released in September 2023 revealed that practising yoga, along with taking oral hypoglycemic agents (drugs that help lower blood sugar), has significant benefits for managing type 2 diabetes.

The study, which included 1,820 people aged 17-75 was separated into two groups. One group practised Yoga, the other group undertook walking. Both were compared to a control group of no regular exercise, this is known as a three arm study. The analysis reported that the yoga group had a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose compared to the control group.

In the UK, 4.4 million people live with diabetes, and an estimated 1.2 million may have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes and being suffering some of the consequences without any management or treatment. Given the rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes globally and yoga’s value, integrating yoga into treatment plans can be a welcomed addition.

One of the foremothers of yoga therapy and one of the most respected yoga therapists worldwide, who has focussed much of her work on Type 2 diabetes, is Dr Shanti Shanti Kaur Khalsa. We’re honoured to have Dr. Shanti Shanti K Khalsa share her expertise at The Minded Institute in an upcoming observation. In this observation, she’ll provide unique insights into managing type 2 diabetes through the lens of Kundalini Yoga.

Dr. Khalsa has specific expertise in working with diabetes and helped design Mind & Movement for Living with Diabetes, a yoga therapy programme for people with type 2 diabetes, and their family members. The program features a yogic approach to Diabetes Self-Management, including stress reduction, physical activity, healthy eating, and social support.

Mind & Movement for Living with Diabetes, was hosted by Certified Diabetes Educators in 2 hospitals. As part of her experience in the field of diabetes self-care, Dr Khalsa also spent six years focused on community education in the Diabetes Prevention & Control Program with the New Mexico State Department of Health.
