In August 2023, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) reported on the Vital Role of Yoga Therapy in Oncology Care. The ASCO is the world’s leading professional organisation for physicians and oncology professionals caring for people with cancer.
In their article, two doctors specialising in oncology and cancer prevention care shared their insights into how ‘ASCO guidelines support the use of yoga practices to help patients with cancer manage fatigue and nausea and to help improve overall quality of life.’
Additionally, they suggest considering yoga for patients with breast cancer who are grappling with joint pain related to aromatase inhibitor usage, as well as those experiencing post-treatment pain from breast or head and neck cancers.
Similarly, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network advocates for yoga as an effective remedy for cancer-related fatigue and nausea. They advise patients to contemplate yoga for alleviating distress, enhancing cognitive function, mitigating pain, and managing menopausal symptoms.
We are pleased to see so many established institutes recognising that yoga therapy can be used as a tool to support cancer care.
Here in the UK, the BSIO (British Society for Integrative Oncology) is the leading professional organisation for integrative oncology.
On April 20th the BSIO is holding it’s Annual Conference 2024, which aims to promote the integration of evidence-informed conventional, nutritional, lifestyle and complementary medicine to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. This online event will highlight the benefits of taking an evidence-informed integrative approach to cancer care to optimise quality of life and clinical outcomes across the age spectrum.
