The Om Mani Padme Hum chant is an ancient Tibetan chant, which means ‘My Heart is opening like the jewel in a lotus flower’.
Chanting, first and foremost, is a spiritual practice that many traditions integrate to deepen ones connection to oneself and the universe. Chanting can also provide comfort and inspiration. Through the repetition of mantras, full phrases, can direct one’s thoughts to a specific manner that is personally meaningful.
However, we also know from personal experience that the rhythmic repetition of sounds or mantras, can induce a state of relaxation similar to meditation. This is backed by research that shows this place of relaxation can help reduce stress and lower blood pressure.
What is so special about the ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ chant specifically?
A paper published in the International Journal of Science and Research from 2016 investigated the specific hertz of each of the 6 syllables. The paper found that chanting this mantra activates particular frequencies associated with each syllable, resonating at levels known to induce positive physical and biological changes.
These frequencies can be a catalyst for transformative shifts from within, they perfectly aligned with the mantra’s translation, akin to the jewel like beauty of the gradual unfolding of a lotus flower.
Minnie usually isn’t far away when Heather Mason, founder and CEO of The Minded Institute, chants Om Mani Padme Hum. It often sends her to sleep after several rounds!
If chanting is something you are unfamiliar with sharing, or even practicing yourself, we invite you to start with a mantra that resonates with you. This might simply be the first syllable, OM.
