Scientists discover a new pathway in the brain which may help address Parkinson’s symptoms

Neuroscience research insights: Scientists discover a new pathway in the brain which may help address Parkinsons symptoms, can combining these insights with yoga therapy improve the lives of those affected?

Researchers have unveiled a revolutionary discovery, identifying neurons that play a crucial role in controlling left and right movements and specifically the capacity to turn.

Through a series of research studies beginning in 2020 culminating in findings published on February 12th, Scientists at the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen have uncovered a cluster of neurons situated in the brainstem, responsible for receiving signals from the basal ganglia.

Before 2020 there was limited information regarding the refinement of movement and neurons that connect to the spinal cord.

Utilizing optogenetics, (a biological techniques to control the activity of neurons via light activation, remember light is a form of energy) scientists were able to note this network, which courses through the basal ganglia, to the pons, to the thalamus, to a bunch of neurons in the medulla oblongata all the way to the spinal cord.

The descending communication of this network plays a pivotal role in directing voluntary movements such as walking, providing a more profound insight into the coordination process.

In particular, identifying this network helped clarify that the act of turning relies on two distinct motor pathways. This includes the movements of the limbs and then separately the movement of the upper body.

When there is a loss of dopamine, such as occurs in Parkinson’s Disease, these two networks do not work in unison and hence people have trouble turning and must take tiny steps to do so.

Technologies exist, such as deep brain stimulation to activate particular pathways in the brain. This new research may allow clinicians to activate this pathway, improving turning and may be the gateway to understanding other issues of gait and how to resolve them.

Although yoga cannot specifically target this pathway, research does show it can momentarily increase levels of dopamine. When offered in conjunction with cutting edge techniques we may be able to improve the lives of those with PD.
