Loving Kindness Meditation (LKM) supports self-care and improved mood. Research also finds LKM is associated with enhanced interpersonal connections, changes in brain functioning, improved immunity, and better emotion regulation. It is therefore a perfect practice for those whose mental health is suffering or experiencing chronic pain. Unfortunately, studies have shown that the practice, if not modified can highlight feelings of self-loathing and remind people of painful experience.
In this interactive professional training Heather Mason will:
- Provide an overview of what LKM is and guide practices
- Review research expressing the health benefits of LKM
- Discuss why those with mental and physical health needs struggle with the practice
- Teach a host of techniques to use in order to effectively teach LKM to vulnerable populations and allow participants to practice delivering some of these techniques with time for Q and A.
Heather Mason is the Founder of the Minded Institute and The Yoga in Health Care Alliance. Following 13 years of intense depression, anxiety, and PTSD she traveled to South East Asia and engaged in intense yoga and meditation practice for 3 years. During her time in monasteries, Heather specifically rejected LKM as it only caused more negative thinking. As a result, over a two year period, her meditation teacher taught her adaptive practices to allow her to access the benefits and it transformed her. She is grateful to share these with others. Heather holds post-graduate education in Physiology, Neuroscience, Psychotherapy, and Buddhist Studies and weaves insights from all of these disciplines into her trainings.
